In 2026, banks remain painfully slow in adopting new technologies, especially in frontline financial crime operations. Analysts, under pressure to hit investigation deadlines and drowning in case files, quietly turn to public AI tools to speed up their work. At first it’s harmless: rewriting case summaries, simplifying policy text, drafting email templates. But convenience quickly becomes a habit.

Within months, first-line analysts begin pasting increasingly sensitive information into external AI systems — customer narratives, transaction histories, SAR drafts, even internal typology notes. None of it is malicious; it’s just faster. And because analysts are early adopters while their institutions lag years behind, no one notices that the boundary between internal data and public AI infrastructure has evaporated.

The crisis breaks when a regulator discovers that multiple banks have inadvertently exposed regulated data to external LLMs. Worse, several models have quietly learned from this data, embedding fragments of customer behaviour, investigative logic, and internal control design into their training sets. In some cases, the AI even begins offering “insights” that suspiciously resemble real customer cases from multiple banks.

The fallout is immense: forced model purges, mass customer breach notifications, and emergency regulatory scrutiny. And the uncomfortable truth emerges — not through cybercrime or hostile actors, but through frontline staff simply trying to make their jobs easier.
